A stunning visualization of the biggest and best billion dollar startups in tech and social media. The billion dollar startups infographic charts a timeline of birth dates of companies such as: Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Evernote, Dropbox, Groupon and instagram. The graphic also visualises the estimated value (Facebook has more market value than all the other companies combined!). Number of employees – can you believe Instagram valued at 0.74 billion only has 13 employees!

So this is a great design and a great example of good, clear and elegant data visualisation. You can clearly see the information at a glance and make comparisons against all the companies listed. A lot of infographics these days tend to be much more story and illustration based and have moved away from pure data viz. I think a big part of the reason for this is that data viz is actually very hard to do – simple elegant design has nowhere to hide and every element on the page has to justify itself.

So I see this as a refreshing infographic with clean simple design and colours. I like the comparative stats and how it has a focus on limited information without trying too hard.
