Survival of the fittest. It’s a very real thing. 250 million sperm leave on a journey and only one makes it – that has to be the toughest odds of survival that I have ever heard. It might seem trite in comparison but when you consider those odds, winning X Factor suddenly looks a lot more doable.
For me, there is nothing more amazing or magical than nature. How an acorn can grow into a huge oak tree seems to defy all logic. But, then consider the miracle (and at 250 million to one odds, it is a miracle) and everything else pales into insignificance. After reading this story of a sperms journey how is it possible that anyone gets pregnant at all?
Being a sperm has to be the toughest job in the world. It has to compete with millions of others just like it, it has to swim at the fastest and hardest speeds upstream. A sperm has to endure hostile environments and above all else has to fight its way into an egg once it reaches the destination. Fending off all other suitors.
The Journey of the Winning Sperm infographic is a bit of a gem. It’s a fascinating lesson into something that we all think we know (sperm meets egg, baby results) but to understand all the finer details is a different matter. There’s a lot of information to be learnt.
I have to say I love this infographic. The design is arresting and engaging. The bold use of the egg in the banner title, combined with the sperm connecting with the egg at the bottom of the graphic visually delivers the story in hand. The use of enhanced images encourages the feel of a scientific nature.
The story flows through the graphic as the sperm progresses on its journey and leads the reader down the page. Each stage is illustrated with a clear graphic and the flow of sperm help to direct the flow of reading. Snappy sub titles for each section delivers the key information with numbering so the reader doesn’t get lost. If I only had one comment it would be that the text could benefit being bigger but it is a minor comment.
This is an excellent infographic about a fascinating topic. Overall Ovulation Calendar get a 9 out of 10 for a bold and informative infographic.
