Furniture Tipping

When I was at school I had a scary incident when a piece of heavy gym equipment tipped-over on top of me. Pinning me to the floor trapped. For a few very frightening seconds I thought I would be crushed and suffocated. Fortunately for me there were other people around who pulled the equipment away but I still remember the fear as the heavy load began to fall on me.

Not having children I have never had to consider the safety of the furniture that I buy or to ‘child-proof’ rooms. The only danger is to myself when I scale shelves to reach the top. Being rather on the short side this is pretty common. I have found myself in comedic situations where only by the grace of god did a shelving unit fall over and squash me.

Between 2000-2014 360 children (US) were killed by furniture falling over, 84% of those children were under 9 years of age, 62% of these fatalities were caused by TV’s. You only need to imagine how heavy old style CRT TV sets are and how much damage that could cause to a small child.
