The True Cost of Work Related Injuries

Do you know what it costs and how many different people are affected when someone gets hurt at work? This graphic from Safety Videos outlines those who get hurt and those occupations which face a higher hazard than the normal job. When an accident at work happens, the employee faces an immediate financial hit in the form of lower wages. The employer also takes a hit in their productivity and profitability as a result of their employee being unable to work. The employer will also likely face an increase in their worker’s compensation insurance premium due to the accident. Another affected party is the employee’s family who faces the stress of an uncertain future and financial instability when the bread winner of the house is unable to work due to injury. There are many occupations that face a high chance of getting injured on the job including farmers, millwrights, taxi drivers, lumberjacks, and construction workers. Also, interestingly enough, men are twice as likely to get injured at work then a woman. Another unfortunate statistic is that a man is 11 times more likely to die during an on the job accident then a woman is – likely due to the different occupations men and women take. In the end, there are many costs that are not easily seen when it comes to work related injuries – costs that should be avoided.
