Panda and Penguin are the popular terms anybody in Internet marketing would be familiar with. Those who don’t know these are the names given to the updates done by Google to its search algorithms with the aim to give relevant results to the users.

Panda: This was mainly focused on the Content. Basically sites with shallow and low quality content were penalised. On the other hand sites with fresh and unique quality content got a good benefit. According to Google, “This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful.” About 12 % of total search was affected by panda.

Penguin: This was an update which was targeted for the sites that are not following Google’s quality guide lines. This was more of a penalty for the sites which were over optimised. According to Google’s official Blog, “It is important algorithm change targeted at web spam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines.” Only 3.1% of the total results were affected by this.
